Abstract:Various types of masonry structural systems found in the United States are discussed, along with the range of masonry materials used in their construction. The system of masonry code development in the United States is reviewed and the principal masonry design codes and masonry material specifications are discussed. Finally, the current state of masonry research in the United States is summarized, with emphasis on the motivation for that research.
