Abstract:
Based on geometric programming, an optimization procedure for the design of structures is developed, and its effectiveness is discussed. The geometric programming background necessary to understand the procedure is given, and a computer program to implement the procedure is presented. The optimization procedure was applied successfully to solve optimally large reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete structural design problems and to determine the sensitivity of the design to parameter values. Its application to the design of a continuous reinforced concrete slab bridge is presented.
