Abstract:
Presents test data on the structural deformations and strength of reinforced concrete beams undergoing alkali-silica reaction (ASR). To establish the full extent of the effects of ASR, the beams were singly reinforced with shear links; further, two types of reactive aggregates were used--one was highly reactive and the other was less rapidly reactive. The beams were left unloaded in an environment favorable to ASR. The effects of the time-dependent ASR on concrete and steel strains, deflections, and cracking are reported. The beams were then tested to failure, and the influence of ASR on ultimate flexural strength and modes of failure is described. The results show that ASR can create large irreversible concrete and steel strains which will affect the overall serviceability, strength, and stability of reinforced concrete beams. The maximum recorded loss in flexural capacity due to ASR was about 25 percent.
