Abstract:
As part of a long-term research project on the punching shear strength of reinforced concrete flat plates, a series of nine half-scale models representing two adjacent edge and corner panels of a building floor have been tested to failure. The design, fabrication, instrumentation, and ultimate behavior of the models are described and test results are presented. The study indicates that the mechanism of failure of a slab-column-spandrel connection is greatly influenced by the strengths of the slab and beam elements adjoining the front and side column faces, respectively. Based on the information gathered from the failure of the 24 edge and corner column connections, the effects of the strength of the spandrel beam, or torsion strip, and the slab-steel ratio on the mechanisms of failure are discussed.
