Abstract:
Presents a simple method for computing secondary horizontal bending moment due to continuity in the walls of grouped circular silos. The method was derived from a comprehensive series of finite element analyses for unit-diameter silos in groups of two, three, four, and six silos. The analyses identified the worst-case combinations of full and empty silos, which were then used in analyses with several different stiffnesses (as measured by the ratio of silo diameter-to-wall thickness.
