Abstract:This chapter is new in its entirety, since the 1996 ACI Code contained no ultimate strength design criteria for shear. . .The major philosophy of this chapter is to produce members for which ultimate strength tends toward being governed by flexure rahter than shear, so that the members will have a ductile character. The various reasons for continuing the design practice of the past in terms of seeking ductility are discussed in the commentary to Chapter 16. This chapter includes an explanation of: Ultimate shear strength; Web reinforcement; Stirrups and Bent Bars; Stress restrictions; Web reinforcement restrictions; Shear stress in slabs and footings; Lightweight aggregate concrete.
