Abstract:Slender sheer walls in multistory buildings are discussed in this paper and answers are given to such questions as "Why do we need them?" and "What do we know about their design?". Also discussed are the historical development of the use of shear walls, their performance in earthquakes of the past 10 years (both good and bad), and finally, the available design information and our future needs in the area of design of shear walls for strength, stiffness and ductility, as well as needs in the area of analysis for the dynamic response of shear wall structures.
