Abstract:
This paper illustrates the development of reinforced elastomeric expansion joint seals. It outlines the laboratory procedures and simulated-service and field testing necessary to achiever a balance in design and materials to comply with engineering requirements. The paper also reveals the scope of studies - many performed at the request of government and consulting agencies - which determine recommendations for anchors, sealants, installartion methods, materials, and other peripheral elements. It further establishes the reliability of current sealing systems and indicates how current research and development projects can result in advanced systems for future applications.
