Abstract:
The recent revisions in recommendations for selecting and designing bearing pads for use in building construction presented in the 1985 revision to the Prestressed Concrete Institute's Design Handbook are outlined. These revisions are summarized and discussed. The selection of pads includes consideration of rotation effects, and design of pads is based on a straightforward linear equation. Testing, both in this work and earlier work of others, shows slippage of pads under high compressive stress may occur at much lower shear forces than have been previously recognized, and guidance is given in this area.
