Abstract:
A brief review of the history of the abolishment of grade crossing in the City of Philadelphia may be of interest. Prior to the consolidation in 1854 the area of the city was 2.75 sq. miles; it now has an area of 129.5 sq. miles, which includes what was formerly the Country of Philadelphia, embracing twenty-seven outlying districts; each of these districts had much unoccupied territory and was governed by its own local authorities.
