Abstract:
Nearly all kown materials, whether natural or artificial, are undergoing some sort of disintegrating, at least when exposed to the weather, and in accord with the laws of nature. The bacterial or fungus decay of wood, the rusting of iron, the gradual weathering of all natural rocks are examples of these great principles, which might be summed up in the terse language of the thermodynamist, "the entropy of the universe is constantly increasing."
