Abstract:
Commercial production of steel and portland cement concrete in the U.S. began after the Civil War. During the latter part of the 19th century, structural members were composed of steel shapes encased in concrete, long before the concrete industry had terms to differentiate between structural concrete members and composite steel and concrete elements.
