Abstract:
After a few comments on the fundamental philosophy of ultimate load design, a short discussion of the formulas used for practical design (rectangular stress prism) is given. Designs are carried out for slabs and beams and for columns with and without bending by the conventional and ultimate load design methods. Some comparisions are made of the results as regards amount of space occupied, time sagging of members and cost of construction. Remarks are offered on the appropriateness of using elastic frame analysis, plastic theories and the various ultimate stress prisms.
