Abstract: Approximate formulas are presented for locating the points beyond which soil pressure does not affect bending and shearing stresses in the footing. A means of ascertaining the bet vertical soil pressures and the resulting shears and bending moments is included. Once these values are established, the design of the footing may proceed in the usual manner.
