Abstract: Test data obtained in several investigations of the relation between ultimate bearing capacity and the ratio of footing area to loaded area of concrete and rock foundations are summarized. The results show that for the higher ratios (over lO:l), the AC1 Code requirements are too conservative. An alternative design formula is proposed.
