Abstract:
In an eccentrically loaded footing various combinations of breadth and length offer themselves as solutions to the foundation problems with in the ground pressures allowed. This paper considers the normal design arrangement whereby the equivalent singly eccentirc load falls within the middle third, together with the case where it falls outside this region. It suggests a logical approach to the choice based on the assumption that, where possible, an engineer wil prefer a square footing to one that is long and narrow.
