Abstract:This paper is intended to show how the degree of fixity method employed by the author, permits the clear understanding of the P-A effect, and the determination of the P for columns and frames, without making reference to the difficult concepts of restrained sway or free sway. The method takes into account the real situation of restriction of the member in the structure, furnished by the members meeting at their ends, and it reveals some advantages over the ACI method.
