Abstract:The application of consistent equilibrium and ultimate strength considerations to the design and detailing of reinforced concrete beams is described. Basic tools include struts and ties, nodes, fans, and arches. Comparisons with experiments on a shearwall coupling beam and on a deep beam, and three design examples illustrate the practical application of these tools.
