Issue:

6

Abstract:

Successful planning, forming, and installation of expansion joints requires coordinated design and construction decisions before concrete forming and placement. This coordination includes: 1) establishing construction tolerances for formwork and concrete placement; 2) reviewing the manufacturer’s printed installation instructions (MPII) for the specified expansion joint; 3) estimating slab movements that will occur after forming and placement but before joint installation; 4) defining the installation timing; and 5) joint protection and repair. Effective coordination of these factors is essential to achieving successful expansion joint construction.

Abstract:

In high-rise construction, crane-dependent climbing systems rely on crane lifts to reposition formwork and platforms, often competing with other operations. Self-climbing systems address this challenge by taking the crane out of the equation, allowing crews to climb on their own schedule and maintain a consistent rhythm from floor to floor. Recent advancements in system design and control are expanding where and how self-climbing systems can be applied. This article explains the benefits of self-climbing systems, highlights advancements, and discusses Doka’s application of the technology.

Abstract:

This month’s Q&A focuses on issues related to meeting in-place concrete strength requirements for removing forms for reinforced concrete slabs. It explains how the contractor might accelerate the construction schedule by implementing concrete mixtures with compressive strengths exceeding those specified for the project.
