Abstract:
Presents data relating to the bending moments developed in the walls of long tanks, particularly near the vertical corner joints between adjacent wall panels. A finite element solution has been used to calculate the vertical and horizontal bending moment coefficients for tank walls with the following boundary conditions along the top and bottom edges: (1) fixed base, free top; (2) fixed base, hinged top; and (3) hinged base, hinged top. It is shown that the pattern of the bending moments in a long wall under hydrostatic loading is significantly modified near the ends and appropriate design values are included.
