Abstract:
Viscosity modifying admixture (VMA) and polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) are often combined to enhance workability of concrete. However, the competitive adsorption between these complex admixtures can greatly influence rheological properties. This study investigated their combined effect on yield stress and plastic viscosity of cement paste made with low water-to-binder ratio of 0.2. Two anionic VMAs with charge densities of 25% and 75% and a PCE with charge density of approximately 70% were incorporated. Furthermore, two classes of cement pastes were prepared: (1) the PCE content was fixed; and (2) the mini-slump flow was fixed at (200±10) mm by tailoring PCE content. Results indicated that increasing the content and charge density of VMA led to a higher yield stress and plastic viscosity for cement paste made with a fixed PCE content. In the case of cement paste made with a constant mini-slump flow, although the incorporation of VMA with 75% charge density required a higher PCE content, it was more effective to increase the plastic viscosity compared to VMA with 25% charge density. This study aims to elucidate and modulate the dual influence of VMAs on both yield stress and plastic viscosity, which can be critical for formulators to tailor rheological properties for specific applications, particularly where a controlled level of viscosity and yield stress is required to mitigate segregation while preserving adequate flowability.
