Abstract:
This investigation proposes a new method for the evaluation of cementitious systems containing supplementary cementitious materials for Delayed Ettringite Formation. The basic principle of the method involves modifying the Kelham method above by extending the soak period from 12 hours to 36 hours; everything else is kept the same. The motivation for using a longer soak time is to replicate the conditions experienced by mass concrete at early ages. The Kelham and Fu methods were designed to simulate curing conditions borne from steam curing related to the precast structures industry. However, mass concrete tends to experience elevated-temperatures time periods much longer than 12 hours. Therefore, the use of a longer soak time provides information with the manifestation of DEF in mass concrete structures.
