Abstract:
Over the past several years, we have worked to transition a seminar style, introductory course into a project-based course with high levels of faculty interaction and teamwork. Students are introduced to the civil engineering profession while learning about the key aspects of technical communication. In the first year of a department-wide offering, the pandemic created new challenges by limiting classroom occupancy and increasing remote attendance. Through effective use of classroom technologies, we were able to maximize the in-person attendance while allowing for interactions with the remote students. We were able to maintain class field trips, group mentoring, and guest speakers throughout the semester. Teams of students propose and develop solutions to a wide range of issues on campus and present their findings to faculty and alumni judges. The remote teaching tools from the pandemic have allowed us to incorporate more alumni from a wider range of backgrounds in these presentations. This feedback has encouraged some groups to continue developing their ideas into built projects or startup companies. While student, alumni, and faculty feedback is continuing to be gathered and incorporated, the course has received as a positive improvement over the previous offering. In this presentation, we will discuss the pivot from in-person delivery to a hybrid modality while also scaling the enrollment.
