Abstract:
Alkali free accelerators initiate the formation of ettringite in concrete in a rapid fashion, which leads to a stiffening - without complete setting - of the printed layers soon after placement, thus increasing the buildability of the 3D printed concrete. It is essential to understand the method of addition of the accelerator - either within the concrete mixture, or at the nozzle - to provide the best means of improving the buildability. The paper explores various experimental techniques for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the alkali-free accelerators in 3D printed concrete mixtures. A primary emphasis is placed on the use of the squeeze flow test for evaluation of the early age structural build up that results with the use of such admixtures.
