Abstract:
Sodium chloride, calcium chloride, or magnesium chloride anti-icing brines are more efficient at preventing ice build-up on roads than rock salt crystals. However, as shown in various studies, they can be detrimental to concrete and promote scaling or joint deterioration. This article presents results of a 5-year evaluation of mechanical properties of concrete cylinders immersed in four anti-icing brines and tested in compression.
