Abstract:
In this paper, first an analysis of the possible path followed by ultrasonic waves in cracked concrete specimens (direct transmission) is shown, together with the usual formulations to estimate the deepness of cracks. This analysis shows the existing scattering which contributes to limitate the applicability of this technique. Second, the influence of several factors upon the transit time is analyzed: boundary effect, crack width, age of concrete and the existence of padding in the crack. In addition to the interesting partial conclusions obtained, the results are opening ways to delve into the relationship which exists between crack deepness and the distance of the transducer to the axis of the crack as a determining factor.
