Abstract:
The article describes the main aspects of design and construction of the structure of the Mapfre Building, on Vía Augusta, Barcelona. The building has five underground levels for parking. Rising avobe the ground floor are two twin towers providing commercial and office space. The floor slabs of the towers, each with an area of 1400 square meters, are made of slabs with a post tensioning provided by unbonded tendons. There are a total of eight slabs, each with an area of 38.76 x 36.36 m. The column separation, with maximum clearance of 13,35 between axis, and the limited thickness of the slabs (40 cm) are the reasons that justify the resolution of the resisting structure by means of the system described in the Article. The article includes, in addition, some considerations about the main characteristics of the post-tensioned flat-slabs and establishes comparisons between them and the conventional reinforced concrete floors.
