Abstract:
The use of high strength concrete in tall buildings has become increasingly more widespread due to the suitability of its characteristics in vertical bearing elements. These characteristics are not purely limited to increase the strength capacity and the ensuing reduction in size, volume and weight, but also to the great improvements related to durability and time dependent effects. However, in order to ensure maximum effectiveness, the design of the structure should take into account the specific criteria indicated in the paper, in order to prevent or reduce the effects that creep in vertical members may have on the long-term response of the structure, even though this is very much improved compared to that obtained from normal concrete. The paper includes a description of the use of this type of concrete in the Torre Espacio Building in the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid.
