Abstract:
The behavior of coupled structural walls during strong earthquakes is greatly influenced by the strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of coupling beams. Given their low
span-to-depth ratio (typically less than 3) and expected high shear stress demand (often greater than 6√𝑓𝑐 ′ [psi], where f’c is the concrete compressive strength), the design and construction of these coupling beams have long represented a challenge to structural engineers and contractors.
