Abstract:
This is an interview with ACI past president Chester P. Siess, also an Honorary Member of the Institute, who served on Committee 318, the Institute's Standard Building Code committee, from 1953 until 1997. He remains as a consulting member of the committee, During his more than 40 years on the committee, Siess maintained files of reports, votes, and meeting minutes as background in the development of each new code. In this interview of the University of Illinois professor emeritus by Chicago engineer Nancy L. Gavlin, such topics as the first ACI ultimate strength design code, provision for slab design, operation and structure of the committee, and suggestions for future changes in the code are covered.
