Abstract:
The need for environmentally friendly alternatives to portland cement (PC) concrete has led to increasing interest in alternative cements. The study presented in this paper compared the shear strength, long-term compressive strength, and carbonation in belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement and PC concrete beams. A total of twelve 8 ft long beams were made: eight BCSA cement concrete beams and four PC concrete beams tested at various ages. Year-old specimens were stored outside until they were tested. Cross sections were cut from the 1-year beams, and the pH was tested to determine carbonation depths. The BCSA cement concrete beams had similar shear strengths and behavior when compared to the PC concrete beams, and code equations were generally conservative for both cements. No visible carbonation was detected in either material after 1 year outdoors. Compressive strengths of cores showed increased strength over time in BCSA cement concrete, similar to PC concrete.
