Abstract:
Six diagonally reinforced concrete coupling beam specimens were tested under lateral displacement reversals. The key test parameters were: 1) specimen aspect ratio; 2) specimen shear stress demand; and 3) size of diagonal reinforcement. Test results showed that the nominal shear strength calculated per ACI 318-14 significantly underestimated specimen peak shear strength. Specimen peak shear strength can be satisfactorily predicted by the shear associated with the development of nominal flexural strength at the beam ends. The experimental-to-predicted strength ratio appeared to be further improved when skin reinforcement was considered. All specimens achieved an ultimate drift above 5.0%. Specimen drift capacities increased as the aspect ratio increased but appeared not to be sensitive to the specimen shear stress demand or size of diagonal reinforcement.
