Abstract:
Provision 18.10.6.2 of ACI 318-14 requires boundary elements when the calculated concrete strains exceed 0.003, and it provides an equation for this check. The author uses this equation to develop design equations for rectangular walls with uniformly distributed longitudinal reinforcement. He also provides graphical tools that can be used to identify the need for boundary elements in low- and mid-rise buildings.
