Abstract:
The residence of Edward K. Rice, FACI, uses concrete in several forms to create an idyllic Southern California home requiring minimal maintenance. Post-tensioned floor and roof slabs allow large areas of fenestration in the facades, revealing spectacular views. To help prevent cracking of ceramic floor tile and eliminate the need for waterproofing on the roof, expansive cement from the first full-scale production run of Type K cement was used in the concrete for the floor slabs and exposed concrete roof. Exterior walls and most interior partitions employ tinted, split-face concrete masonry units to eliminate the need for painting.
