Abstract:
The analysis and design of a deep beam, using the strut-and-tie method (STM) defined in Appendix A of the ACI Building Code, is presented. This example demonstrates the required strength checks for struts, ties and nodal zones. The interesting geometry and strength checks for some of the more complicated nodal zones, and the anchorage of reinforcement at the nodes are also presented. The design given here is not unique because a variety of solutions are possible with the STM procedure.
