Abstract:
The availability of high-strength reinforcing bars has prompted engineers to use these in the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams; their high tensile strength helps to reduce the steel consumption for a given set of design constraints. For every gain, however, there is a risk of some loss in one form or another; results from a parametric study presented herein indicate a substantial savings in the form of quantity of steel in RC beams with the use of high-grade reinforcing bars, albeit it happened with the increased midspan deflection, probable crack width, and bond stresses, as well as the need for the higher reinforcing bar anchorage. The steel grade Fe550 is found to be optimal among all other reinforcing bar grades considered in this study.
