Abstract:
The seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) wide-column-tosteel (S) beam (RCS) connections was experimentally investigated through the test of two beam-column connection subassemblies under lateral displacement reversals. The main variable investigated was the influence of the column width on the joint strength. Test specimens consisted of connections between a rectangular RC column (609 mm [24 in.] wide x 406 mm [16 in.] deep) and a W14x38 continuous steel beam. One specimen featured an embedded steel column as the only shear key, while the other specimen also featured steel band plates wrapping around the column regions just above and below the steel beam. Test results were compared to those obtained from two nearly identical specimens, except for the use of 406 mm (16 in.) square RC columns. It was found that the increase in the RC column width from 406 to 609 mm led to an increase in the joint strength in almost the same proportion. Refinements to existing equations for estimating the effective joint width are proposed based on test results.
