Abstract:In 2000, severe cracking due to alkali-silica reaction was noted in piles supporting a bridge over the tidal estuary of the Barron River near Cairns, Queensland, Australia. After 14 years of searching for a system that could protect the piles and provide confinement to combat further damage, the PileMedic® system was selected. The adopted solution met these goals, could be rapidly and safely installed, and provided major savings compared to the original reinforced concrete encasement option.
