Abstract:
ACI document on curing (ACI 308R-16) recommends a maximum of a 20°F (11°C) temperature difference between the curing water and concrete to minimize stresses due to temperature gradient that could cause cracking. This statement, however, that can be traced to ACI 308-71, is not supported by any data or calculations. The article presents elastic and inelastic analyses and discusses two experiments to evaluate the validity of this ACI temperature difference recommendations.
