Abstract:In reinforced concrete design, there are numerous examples where bent bars at the outside of a frame corner resist closing moments, such as beam-column and wall-slab junctions. The forces in these corners can be modeled using strut-and-tie models. In this article, a new modeling technique where a single node is used to model the curved region of the bar is presented. Specific recommendations for design and detailing using strut-and-tie models with curved-bar nodes in frame corners and dapped-end beams are offered. Complete sample calculations are provided in an attachment to the electronic version of this article.
