From May 4-8, 2026, ACI staff conducted multiple important meetings throughout Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to discover how ACI might better achieve its vision of a future where our stakeholders have the knowledge and skills to use concrete effectively in a changing world. Staff met with delegates of the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE), Vietnam Institute of Building Science and Technology (IBST), Vietnam Ministry of Construction (MOC), Vietnam Concrete Association (VCA), University of Transportation Ho Chi Minh City (UTHCMU), and Ministry of Transportation. Recurring themes included nuclear containment facilities, concrete produced using ocean beach sand and seawater, durability of concrete, low-carbon concrete, organic concrete repair, including repair after fires, and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcement. In addition, the MOC expressed interest in enhancing flood resistance through design and construction with concrete and UTH expressed interest in the use of organic aggregates. While there is a strong interest in moving from a Russian-based code to Eurocodes, most entities expressed an interest in using ACI standards to teach and regulate concrete design and construction. ACI staff also met with individuals interested in forming an ACI Chapter in Vietnam. Zhu Liu, ACI Manager of the APAC Region, will continue leading discussions in efforts to reinforce and improve ACI’s presence in Vietnam.
