Written by the ACI Foundation for ACI President Michael J. Paul When you think of the future of the concrete industry, what image comes to mind? Is it automation, new materials, or the future workforce? For our industry to thrive and continue to advance, we need to invest in it. This is why ACI created the ACI Foundation, whose mission is to make strategic investments in ideas, research, and people to create the future of the concrete industry. The ACI Foundation partners with ACI and community donors to make a difference in the industry. What kind of impact have past donations made? Over 3.2 million USD has been awarded to students; and 5.5 million USD has been invested in research and innovation, which was leveraged into nearly 24 million USD of work. One can appreciate numbers; they give things scale. However, stories also paint a picture of donations at work. When you support the ACI Foundation, you support the students who ensure the industry remains dynamic and capable of adapting to new challenges. Through donations, the ACI Foundation financially assists students and helps to engage them in the ACI experience. When students attend the ACI Concrete Convention, they visit or join technical committees, present research, and network with ACI members, volunteers, and fellow students. In this way, the ACI Foundation provides opportunities for students to contribute successfully upon graduation. A few recent notable student awardees are: Maya Cottongim was the 2020-2021 awardee of the Baker Student Fellowship. She was awarded a fellowship while pursuing her master’s degree in structural engineering at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA. Today, Cottongim is working as a Project Engineer for Schaefer in Arizona, USA, and serves on the Board of the ACI Arizona Chapter; Ferdinand Niyonyungu was prompted to learn about reinforced concrete structures after witnessing structural collapses in Rwanda. Niyonyungu was awarded the Tribute to the Founders Fellowship in 2022-2023 and received his master’s degree in civil engineering from The University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS, USA. He plans to learn all he can here before returning to his home country and using his knowledge to build safer structures; and Caleb Stevenson works as a Structural Engineer for Onefourtwo Design Group and serves as a member of ACI Committee 551, Tilt-Up Concrete Construction. He was the first recipient of the Burg-Coleman Iowa State ‘77 Fellowship. Stevenson has “a passion for what makes buildings stand up” and is invested in the concrete industry and ACI. Read about how other past student recipients have influenced the industry in the March 2024 issue of Concrete International (CI). Sometimes a donation impacts multiple programs, such as the ACI Foundation-funded research by Cameron Murray on the “Stress-Strain Analysis of Belite Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cement Concrete for Structural Applications.” Not only did the research provide data showing that this alternative cement performs similarly to portland cement, but the Graduate Research Assistant involved in the project, Gabriel Johnson, was the recipient of a 2022-2023 ACI Foundation Scholarship. The project provided Johnson with valuable research and ACI experience while impacting all three areas of the ACI Foundation’s mission through the support of technology, research, and people. Read more about this research on p. 49. These are just a few stories from the promising young leaders who are invested in ACI and the future of our industry. “My dear friend, Ann Masek, who leads the ACI Foundation with exceptional passion and vision, makes the case for supporting the ACI Foundation so well that I need say little more. It has been my great privilege and pleasure to be a continuing donor for many years, helping to build the future of ACI and our global concrete industry,” said ACI President Michael J. Paul. “Please join me in donating to this year’s ACI Foundation Annual Appeal.” You can donate by using the QR code provided or through the appeal that will be distributed this month. Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to ACI’s support of the ACI Foundation, 100% of mission-directed donations will be used for the beneficiaries—students, research, and technology.
