Over the last several decades, demand for fly ash for use in concrete mixtures has been growing steadily. In recent years, fly ash has earned a reputation for providing benefits to both the contractor and project owner when used according to recommendations and specifications. A gap between the demand for concrete-quality fly ash and regionally available supply has become a serious concern. With the retirement of older coal-fueled power plants, fewer sources of fly ash from the traditional supply chain are available. Imports are available but are burdened with logistical and cost considerations. One of the most promising resolutions to closing this gap is the use of fly ash previously put into disposal units – ponds and landfills. This activity is known as “harvesting”. In the U.S., it is estimated that over 2.5 billion tons of coal combustion products have been placed in disposal over the last half-century. Today, fly ash marketers are working with owners of these disposal units to assess the viability of harvesting these materials for use in concrete. This presentation will provide an overview of fly ash supply from traditional sources as well as the prospects for harvesting.
