Seismic Bridge Engineering Research, Analysis and Design
TRB 99th Annual Meeting, January 12-16, 2020, Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C
The TRB Standing Committee on Seismic Design and Performance of Bridges (AFF50) is accepting submission of papers related to the seismic analysis, design, performance and inspection of bridges. Papers will be considered for presentation at the 99th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board and possible subsequent publication in the Transportation Research Record. The spotlight theme for the 2020 annual meeting is “A Century of Progress: Foundation for the Future.”
The lectern sessions and workshops focus on research and current issues regarding seismic design and performance of bridges. Owners are especially encouraged to share their experiences. Potential topics include:
Retrospective on seismic bridge analysis and design including:
o Lessons learned from past bridge failures
o Development and advancement of seismic design provisions
o Seismic bridge design advancement through research implementation
• Field observations and lessons learned from recent seismic events
• Performance based seismic design criteria
• Rapid earthquake assessment of bridges
• Post-earthquake inspection and reporting
• Post-earthquake repair techniques
• Design criteria of non-conventional bridges such as arch and cable-supported structures
• Seismic analysis and design for Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) connections
• Geoseismic considerations including liquefaction, slope instability and lateral spreading of soils
• Case Studies of seismic bridge analysis and design including geoseismic issues
• Numerical methods of seismic bridge analysis; capabilities and limitations
• Practices and procedures for site-specific evaluations of earthquake ground motions
• Seismic design and semi-gravity and anchored earth retraining structures
• Field monitoring, comparison with numerical predications and subsequent analysis recommendations
• Seismic design of deep foundations
• Effects of non-shaking seismic hazards include tsunami, fire and utility damage
• Effects of skew and curvature on bridge support width requirements
• Advancements in the quantification of seismic hazards
