MINI SESSION: Cellular Concrete: State of Practice

Tuesday, October 25, 2022  9:00 AM - 10:00 AM, H-Sanger A&B

Learn about cellular concrete and new applications involving: cement and foam technologies; CO2 impact reduction; permeability; and modeling of mechanical properties. A diverse group of presenters from manufacturers, industry group representative and a design practitioner.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Discuss the current standard of practice of cellular concrete applications and understand what cellular concrete is;
(2) Investigate common applications of cellular concrete as a lightweight insulating concrete;
(3) Identify environmental benefits of cellular concrete;
(4) Explain the common application of cellular concrete as a engineered fill material.

This session has been AIA/ICC approved for 1 CEU/PDH credit.

What is Cellular Concrete and How is it Used?

Presented By: Trevor Towery
Affiliation: Elastizell Corp. of America
Description: Cellular Concrete is a unique member of lightweight concrete group. There will be a brief introduction of the production, installation, and material properties. Then case studies will be shared of different applications of cellular concrete that highlight different attributes of the material.

Advances in Engineered Cement and Foam Techniques

Presented By: Gregory Halsted
Affiliation: Portland Cement Association
Description: Through advanced engineered cement and foam technologies, the ingredients that make up cellular concrete can be selected to not only optimize performance in the field but also reduce a great deal of the adverse CO2 impacts often associated with using this alternative fill material.

Uniqueness of Permeable Low-Density Cellular Concrete

Presented By: Milton Gomez
Affiliation: Aerix Industries
Description: An introduction to Permeable Low-Density Cellular Concrete showcases the engineering approach for a sustainable solution that solves hydrostatic geotechnical challenges. The presentation will focus on the testing, quality assurance, and permeability parameters by highlighting specific permeable LDCC case studies.

Density-Property Relationships in Cellular Concrete

Presented By: Tim Tonyan
Description: The unique microstructure of cellular concrete will be described. The relationship between cellular concrete density and key mechanical and physical properties such as compressive strength, stiffness, shear strength and thermal conductivity will be presented. Models for predicting strength, stiffness and other physical properties of cellular concrete will also be presented. Finally, the impact of the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) on the mechanical and physical properties of cellular concrete will be described.
