MINI SESSION: Concrete Column Design and Considerations: Back to the Basics

Monday, October 18, 2021  10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Understanding the basics of reinforced concrete column design, detailing, and constructability is imperative but is not always clearly understood. This session will cover the basics of column design, including discussion on interaction diagram. Topics will include key column design considerations such as reinforcing layout, concrete mix design, joint design/detailing, member slenderness, and constructability. The presentation will highlight several real-world project examples to show the critical interrelationship of code provisions and construction techniques to achieve efficient and elegant designs for these crucial structural elements. Where this methodology is outlined in ACI 318 will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Define short, intermediate, and slender reinforced columns;
(2) Explain the basics of short column-interaction diagrams;
(3) Identify software tools available for analysis;
(4) Summarize best practices for detailing.

This session has been approved by AIA and ICC for 1 PDH (0.1 CEU). Please note: You must attend the live session for the entire duration to receive credit. Mini Sessions will not be available on-demand.
