Productivity in the Concrete Industry—Why Has it Stagnated and How Can ACI Help?

Productivity in the U.S. construction industry has been flat for 50 years, while productivity of U.S. industry in general has nearly doubled in that same time frame. Why? And what can ACI do about it? This session will explore answers to these and other questions and will include presentations from designers and contractors offering their perspectives on how ACI can help confront this very important industry issue. The Opening Session is the official start to the ACI Convention and will be hosted ACI Fellow, George Seegebrecht. We will begin with a welcome by ACI President Jeff Coleman. Next, awards for Honorary Membership and Fellows will be presented. Finally, we'll kick off the convention with our keynote speaker, Brian Lubinski. Why do some highly skilled co-workers excel in their careers and their lives while others, seemingly more gifted in mastering the technical skills of their work, slide into mediocrity, or worse yet, crash and burn? The key is in the development of certain skills that are often over-looked as we develop the technical skills our employers pay us for. In his signature talk, “The Ideal Professional; the key to making lasting contributions in your career and your life”, Brian Lubinski shares a powerful discovery he made over a 38-year career as a wilderness aviator while he pursued the answer to this question.

Additionally, they will include presentations by U.S and international teams involved in 3DConcrete, an NSF AccelNet Program to enhance global network-to-network collaborations on concrete 3D printing. These sessions will highlight the importance of controlling fresh-state properties for the successful execution of 3D concrete printing (3DCP). 3DCP is a new method of casting that can introduce a number of advantages but there are also significant challenges, especially in controlling the viscoelastic properties of the concrete in the fresh state. Academic and industry researchers and practitioners interested in 3DCP should attend this session. Attendees will learn: i) the current state-of-the-art of 3DCP; ii) how rheology directly impacts printing performance; iii) strategies to effectively control workability for 3DCP; and iv) key challenges in bringing 3DCP to practice.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Describe the current state-of-the-art of 3-DCP from a rheological point of view;
(2) Explain how rheology/workability directly impacts printing performance;
(3) Identify strategies to control and adjust workability for effective 3-DCP;

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is seen as one of the most influential material innovations in the construction industry in the twenty-first century. Many research groups in academia or industry worldwide have developed UHPC mixtures, investigated their material properties and their structural behavior and thus have contributed to the increased interest in this type of material. While design guidelines are being drafted or have already been published the application of UHPC has been surpassed the stage of pilot projects in some areas. It seems that UHPC finds more and more ways into the construction industry beyond the “killer application” which was sought in the early days. This session will invite national and international research groups, material suppliers and contractors to share their knowledge in innovations in practical applications.
Learning Objectives:
(1) State UHPC material properties and how these will be utilized in the field;
(2) Explain the sustainability and resiliency of UHPC structures;
(3) Summarize innovations in practical applications;
(4) Recognize the variation of UHPC applications.

Presenation Title: Museum of the Future

Denis McNelis Bio: With over 32 years in the industry since graduation, Denis has worked in all aspects of the delivery of complex projects. The first 16 years after graduation was spent working as a consulting structural engineer followed by 9 years working as the technical director for 2 different steel fabrication companies. Currently working as the Engineering Manager with BAM International based in Dubai, Denis has been able to bring his passion for computers, engineering design and construction knowledge together in helping to deliver the complex Museum of the Future project.

Presentation Abstract: The Iconic Museum of the Future Project in Dubai is an amazing piece of architecture which presented many challenges for the structural engineering design and construction. This presentation will provide an overview of the tools and techniques used to solve some of the challenges in constructing the concrete ring beam supporting the steel diagrid framing for the building and some of the complex interface details between the steel and the ring beam. This is a BIM project from the concept design phase and some lessons learned will be shared.

The session will be co-sponsored with a RILEM technical committee TC 266 - Measuring Rheological Properties of Cement-based Materials.
Given the high flowability and relatively fast casting rate of self-consolidating concrete (SCC), such concrete can exert high form pressure. Accurate assessment of form pressure is necessary from safety and economic points of view. The maximum form pressure and pressure decay are dependent on the structural build-up of the concrete at rest following placement, as well as placement parameters. The objective of this session is to present information on the key parameters (including constituent materials, mixture proportioning, and casting parameters, such as the casting rate, concrete temperature, and reinforcement density) affecting thixotropy and SCC form pressure. Prediction models available for estimating SCC form pressure are also presented.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Describe the role of concrete rheological properties (structural build-up at rest) on form pressure exerted by SCC;
(2) Discuss various test methods to evaluate structural build-up at rest of SCC that can be used for mixture design and quality control on job site;
(3) Review various models that can be used to assess form pressure characteristics and key factors affecting maximum form pressure and pressure decay, including mixture constituents, mixture design, and placement parameters, such as casting rate and presence of reinforcing steel;
(4) Present results of two round robin testing campaigns to evaluate form pressure of SCC and compare findings to different prediction models.

This mini session will present the challenges of producing and placing high strength concrete in markets less accustomed to the use of the material.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Discuss the role of project specifications, placement conditions, and producer experience;
(2) Report the role various parties play in the execution of a project involving high strength concrete;
(3) State the challenges of placing high strength concrete in markets less familiar with its use;
(4) Summarize the experience of engineers and producers as to how to make high strength concrete projects more successful.

Corrosion of concrete in sewer infrastructures is a worldwide concern. Although the mechanism of this corrosion was discovered in the middle of last century, it was not a universal concern until the late 1990s. Since then, research has confirmed that the cause of this corrosion is a biogenic acid attack. Solutions for mitigation and testing processes for assurance have been developed. This session is for anyone interested in knowing exactly what causes sewer corrosion and what methods of mitigation are available.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Describe the biological mechanism that is responsible for the deterioration of concrete in some sewer infrastructures;
(2) Explain the how biological corrosion differs from traditional chemical and physical attack;
(3) Summarize mitigation methods to reduce the rates of degradation to concrete exposed to the effects of microbially induced corrosion;
(4) Identify methods to simulate the biological mechanism.
