Definition: An ACI-certified Shotcrete Nozzleman (Dry-Mix Process) is an individual who has demonstrated knowledge of the dry-mix shotcrete process (via written examination) and the ability to properly place dry-mix shotcrete (via performance examination shooting a limited-size test panel). The Shotcrete Nozzleman (Dry-Mix Process) also possesses substantially more shotcrete work experience in actual dry-mix shotcrete field applications than a Shotcrete-Nozzleman-in-Training (Dry-Mix Process). An ACI-certified Shotcrete Nozzleman-in-Training (Dry-Mix Process) is an individual who has demonstrated knowledge of the dry-mix shotcrete process (via written examination) and the ability to properly place dry-mix shotcrete (via performance examination shooting a limited-size test panel) but possesses substantially less shotcrete work experience than an ACI-certified Shotcrete Nozzleman (Dry-Mix Process). Sponsoring Groups are currently offering Nozzleman-in-Training certifications for Vertical orientation.
Scope and Knowledge:This program requires demonstration of the knowledge covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA): JTA for ACI Certification of Shotcrete Nozzleman The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge that may be included in the examination for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exam. The primary technical resource for this program is the ACI CCS-4 document, “Concrete Craftsman Series: Shotcrete for the Craftsman.” The program requires knowledge in the following areas of shotcrete construction: Basic concrete technology, Shotcrete Equipment, Environmental conditions and precautions, Inspection and preparation of surfaces, Shotcrete placement, principles, and techniques, Communication, Finishing and tolerance controls, Safety, Testing/quality, and Curing.

Certification Requirements: No specific education is required as a prerequisite for Shotcrete Nozzleman-in-Training or Shotcrete Nozzleman certification. A minimum of 25 hours of verified shotcrete work experience is a prerequisite to participate in the performance examination, and to be eligible for certification as a Shotcrete Nozzleman-in-Training (vertical orientation only). A minimum of 500 hours of verified shotcrete work experience is required to be eligible for full Shotcrete Nozzleman certification. An ACI-certified Shotcrete Nozzleman-in-Training may upgrade to full Shotcrete Nozzleman certification for the remainder of their original certification period following submission and verification of documentation reflecting 475 additional hours of shotcrete work experience. ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet the following requirements: A passing grade on the ACI written examination, and Successful completion of the ACI performance examination, and Satisfaction of the work experience requirements for the level of certification sought. The 90-minute (1-1/2 hours) written examination is closed-book and consists of 60 multiple-choice questions. A minimum score of 75% is required to pass the written examination. The performance examination is closed-book and requires actual demonstration of your knowledge of surface preparation, equipment, start-up procedures, proper placing/nozzling technique, finishing, and curing. The examinee must place dry-mix shotcrete in the vertical position and has the option to also place dry-mix shotcrete in the overhead position. Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements. Recertification requires either successful completion of both a verbal interview and performance examination(s) (if eligible) or taking the then-current written and performance examinations in their entireties.
