Certification Programs

ACI offers over 30 certification programs designed to form a minimum qualification for personnel employed within the concrete construction industry. Certification examinations and optional training courses are conducted through an international network of over 135 sponsoring groups. Since 1983, ACI has administered exams to over 900,000 individuals, with over 120,000 certifications currently maintained by ACI.

Pervious Concrete Technician, Installer, and Craftsman


Definition:

A Pervious Concrete Technician is a person who has demonstrated knowledge by successful completion of a written exam about proper procedures to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements, but who lacks the requisite field experience to qualify as a pervious concrete Installer or Craftsman.

A Pervious Concrete Installer is a person who has demonstrated the ability to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements and has documented a limited project-based field experience in placing pervious concrete.

A Pervious Concrete Craftsman is a person who has demonstrated the ability to place, compact, finish, edge, joint, cure and protect pervious concrete pavements and has documented a higher level of field time-based experience in placing pervious concrete.


Scope and Knowledge:

The primary technical resource for these programs is the NRMCA Publication 2PPCRT, “Text Reference: Pervious Concrete Contractor Certification.” These programs require the demonstration of knowledge and/or hands-on skills in the following areas of concrete construction:

  • Basic concrete technology
  • General applications and benefits offered by pervious concrete pavements
  • Pervious concrete materials and mix proportioning
  • Proper use of tools and equipment
  • General design principles of pervious concrete pavements
  • Pervious concrete construction
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting


Certification Requirements:

Pervious Concrete Technician: ACI will grant certification to those candidates who obtain a passing grade on the written examination. The two-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions. The passing grade for the written examination is 75%.

Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements.


Pervious Concrete Installer: ACI will grant certification to those candidates who obtain a passing grade on the written examination and performance examination, and submit a minimum of 3 construction projects with a total area exceeding 10,000 sq. ft.

Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements.


Pervious Concrete Craftsman: ACI will grant certification to those candidates who obtain a passing grade on the written examination and hold a current ACI Concrete Flatwork Associate, Flatwork Finisher, or Advanced Finisher certification, PLUS

  • Complete the Pervious performance examination and submit work experience constructing pervious concrete pavement exceeding 1500 hours
  • OR
  • Submit work experience constructing pervious concrete pavements exceeding 3000 hours.

Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements.

A Pervious Concrete Technician can upgrade to a Pervious Concrete Installer or Pervious Concrete Craftsman at any time during the five-year certification period upon completing the requirements for the corresponding Certification. A Pervious Concrete Installer can upgrade to a Pervious Concrete Craftsman at any time during the five-year certification period upon completing the requirements for the Certification. These subsequent certifications will be recognized for the remainder of that certification period. Your original certification and subsequent recertification periods run concurrently, not consecutively.

Recertification is granted to a Pervious Concrete Technician, Installer, or Craftsman who successfully completes the then-current written examination. Installers and Craftsmen must also complete the continuing work experience.
