This seminar highlights the importance of participating in specialized associations and scientific societies in order to enhance opportunities for cooperation and exchange of expertise, particularly on topics related to concrete and bridges. Expected benefits cover Iraqi professors, engineers from both governmental and private sectors, and technicians.

The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) is a scientific / technical Association comprising members in 100 countries and counting 58 National Groups worldwide. As a non-profit organization, founded in 1929 it has its seat in Zurich, Switzerland.
IABSE deals with all aspects of structural engineering: the science and art of planning, design, construction, operation, monitoring and inspection, maintenance, rehabilitation and preservation, demolition and dismantling of structures, taking into consideration technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects. The term 'Structures' includes bridges, buildings and all types of civil engineering structures, composed of any structural material.
IABSE:
• Organizes conferences worldwide.
• Publishes the high-quality journal SEI.
• Publishes books reflecting the work of its Technical Groups
• Creates technical groups, as required by new needs and technological progress.
• Offers the possibility to join activities within National Groups of IABSE
• Offers programs for young engineers.
• Annual Awards

The Technical Committee (TC) is responsible for the overall technical activities of IABSE such as:
• Performance & Requirements
• Conceptual design
• Structure analysis & evaluation
• Construction methods & processes
• Existing structures
• Sustainability

The presentation will be in two parts:
Part One:
Overview presentation about IABSE and all its activities, publications, conferences, awards and educational programs.

Part Two:
Some insights and discussions about the possible participation and activities of Iraqi engineering institutions and universitie within IABSE. These reflections are based on my personal experiences and knowledge about the Iraqi engineering situation.

Speaker: Raad ABDUL-AZIZ
Dr. Civil Eng. / SIA
Active in the field of structural engineering since his graduation in 1991 from the University of Baghdad, Iraq.
Worked in several engineering firms in Switzerland till 2021 when he established his own engineering firm StructuRAA based in Switzerland.
Member of several engineering societies such as SIA, FIB, ASCE, Fellow Member of IABSE, and part of the Core Members of its technical committee. He published several papers in engineering conferences and journals.
He also was a lecturer in the civil engineering faculty, University of Baghdad 2002-2004.

منذ تخرجه في عام ،1991 كان نشطًا في مجال الهندسة الإنشائية والمدنية. وقد عزز مهاراته وخبراته في الأنشطة
الأكاديمية وكذلك في مجال تصميم الأعمال، سواء في المكاتب الهندسية أو في الشرق الأوسط.
ومن الناحية العملية، تشكلت حياته المهنية كمهندس في نفس الوقت الذي تشكلت فيه مشاركته في الأوساط الأكاديمية.
وكما هو الحال في مكاتب التصميم الخاصة به، فقد شارك في مشاريع أكثر تعقيدًا وتنوعًا. كما تقدمت مسيرته الأكاديمية
حتى حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في الهندسة الإنشائية في عام .2002
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، فهو عضو فعال في العديد من الجمعيات والهيئات الهندسية مثل SIA وIABSE وASCE. وقد
حضر العديد من المؤتمرات ونشر العديد من المقالات في المجلات الهندسية.
يمارس الأنشطة الهندسية في سويسرا منذ عام 2007 وهو مدير StructuRAA في سويسرا منذ عام 2021
انضم إلى الرابطة الدولية لهندسة الجسور والإنشاءات (IABSE (منذ عام 2003 وهو الآن (عضو زميل) وأحد
(الأعضاء الأساسيين) في اللجنة الفنية.
